Memories in a Dream

October

Audrey sat close to me but not too, the instructor going on about something in the background. I looked over and saw her face, focused but bored, framed by her brown hair. She noticed and glanced over. My heart skipped a beat. I hadn't seen her in years but something about seeing her here. I didn't know what to do.

Later on, I was in the classroom late, finishing up something I had been working on. She came in too, to work, and it was just the two of us. Before I left, I wasn't sure what I should say. So I didn't leave. I leaned on the sill and looked out the window at the darkening sky and the slow spread of lights as night fell.

Before long she joined me there. I looked over at her and she at me, and before I could say anything she slid her hand over mine, before looking down and walking back to her desk.

I just can't seem to stop staying here late. It is dark outside again, most of the library is too. A few lights illuminate my desk and not much else. I hear the door to the private study area open and when I look up, I see Audrey again. She smiles and I blush. I take off my glasses and rub my eyes as I shut my laptop.

“Are you finished?” She asks.

“Yeah, I've been here long enough for today I think,” I say, chuckling.

“Oh…” she says, disappointment in her voice.

“Want me to stick around? I don't really have anywhere else to be.” Her expression brightness.

“What will you do? I'm probably going to be a few hours.”

“Dick around on my laptop?” I say, laughing. “Pretty much what I would be doing anywhere else anyway.”

She smiles.

Just like the first time I saw her, Audrey is sitting next to me, on my couch this time. She's sitting closer to me, but not too close. I'm not sure exactly what to do.

"What now?" I say.

Her smile turns coy as she grabs my hand.
